Work Video Chat With Rodrigo

First time ever for a video chat with Rodrigo from his work office. At least until he got a genuine work-related call. PCs and Macs CAN get along, thanks to Google.

No Socks For Mami

Went to Burlington Coat Factory with my mom so she could pick up some socks that she unfortunately ended up never finding. I also struck out with picking up a new pair of shorts (cuz it’s December). So to lick our consumer wounds we went next door to Starbucks and drank some delicious coffees and enjoyed a couple of slices of super moist cake while sitting outside on a sunny, 70 degree December day in San Diego. So the trip was not a total bust. Except for that one girl who walked by.

Yep, Cats Again – Full Day One

Back again with the neighbors’ cats. Last night was my first of three overnights. Today was my first full day of feline pampering, with the Old Town visit to break up my day. Took a bunch of shots of the neighbors’ Christmas decoration since the cat pictures are all starting to look the same.

Old Town With The Hadsells

Some old friends of my mom’s were in town visiting family and they stopped by to say hi to my mom and me. The wife, Judy, worked with my mom many years ago in Zaragoza, Spain in civil service. We took them down to Old Town for lunch where we joined my sister, who surprised my mom with meeting us there. We had a terrific lunch at Casa de Reyes inside Fiesta de Reyes. After lunch we walked around for a couple of hours showing them some of the sites, smells and history of old San Diego, including the middle-of-the-street grave markers. With perfect weather for strolling it was another good tour-guidey kind of day.

Felicia In Belize

Watched Felicia Day’s self-shot, -edited and -presented travel video of her winter trip to Belize. This is how all people should show their trip videos. Be funny, interesting, with lots of quick cuts and seem genuinely interested. No lingering. Doesn’t hurt to be adorable.

Ten Minutes In Disneyland

Out of the blue my friends Sylvia and Rodrigo called me today and told me they were going to take their dogs, Lilo and Stitch, walking up at Downtown Disney, only about an hour away. They wanted to know if I would like to go with them and after thinking about it for half a pico-second I told them sure, why not. I thought it the perfect opportunity for me to a) pick up my annual calendar from the Park, and b) exchange a DVD that my brother gifted me last year but that I already had. Then they told me they were already on their way and would pick me up. So after running across the street to feed the nieghbors’ cats and turn on some lights, I rushed back home to make and scarf down a bland deli turkey sandwich before they arrived. After hitting a bit of traffic heading north and then stopping at a Carl’s Jr. for a quick potty break for everyone including the dogs, we finally arrived at Downtown Disney. We had heard that dogs weren’t allowed to walk there but the Tapias are adventurous and didn’t think that rule was either fair or that it applied to them. They were ready with the “We’re walking them to the kennel at the entrance” routine. The dogs attracted a lot attention which worried us at first, but we all walked the entire length of Downtown Disney without a single security guard seeming to mind. Matter of fact, most people broke into wide smiles when they saw them. Unfortunately, the giant World of Disney store not only wouldn’t let me even get store credit for my DVD, but they were also completely sold out of calendars. So we walked even farther, through the security checks with the dogs, so I could run into Disneyland to get the calendar. I went as far as the Emporium at the beginning of Main Street, only to discover that they too were recently sold out of calendars! It’s still 2011 for a few more days! I went to City Hall to ask them for help. They were nice enough to call all the stores at Disney’s California Adventure for me. Not one store over there had any left either. That’s when my ten minutes in Disneyland was up. We walked back toward the car and I decided to try the store inside the Disneyland Hotel, just feeling like my luck was about to change. And I was right. It got worse. They had already been sold out for a while. But I did get a number to call to order it over the phone, so my hopes are not all yet dashed. On the way home we stopped at a Chick-fil-A for a quick bite of not-cow meat. The manager, an extreme dog-lover, came out with two dog biscuits for Lilo and Stitch. Besides the calendar and DVD let-downs, it was a good time and a really fun adventure.

Christmas Dinner With 5/9 Of The Family

My sister along with my older brother and niece (who brought their three black cats) came over this evening for a much improved Christmas dinner over what didn’t happen yesterday. After a dinner of tasty túrós csusza that my mom made we watched a DVD of when my niece and nephew were really young. While a good bit of it was cute and fun to watch, admittedly some of it was quite boring (as evidenced by my brief nap at one point). But we had fun playing with the cats until it was time for dinner, part two: crepes that my sister made fresh for us. Our more robust 7/9 family Christmas, complete with some belated present opening, will happen sometime during the first week of January when my nephew returns from his honey-lovin’ San Francisco trip.

Hangin’ With Rocky, Part Two

My squirrelly friend, Rocky, rejoined me today for another round of mutual weeding in our backyard. Today I was more prepared and this time had my trusty camera with me. This time he came even closer than yesterday, only about four feet away. I think he may have been jealous of the time I spent with Janey the orangutan this morning at the zoo. After weeding, we exchanged pleasant “Merry Christmases” and then went on our separate ways. I hope we get even closer tomorrow. My plan is to eventually have him fall asleep in my lap while I pet him.

Christmas Day At The Zoo With My Mom

Decided when I woke up this morning that for Christmas I would take my mom walking around the San Diego Zoo for a couple hours. It got her out of the house, out amongst others of her own kind, and we enjoyed some Christmas decorations while having hot drinks. We got our picture taken with a fake, seated Santa by an older gentleman who obviously thought the large expanse of distant trees behind us was a lot more important than getting my mom and I completely in frame. Amateurs. Elderly amateurs. Later on I ended up having a very special moment with a 49 year old female named Janey. She had long, flowing red hair. She walked over to where I was sitting and sat down next to me. From about a foot away we gazed into each other’s eyes for what seemed like a few minutes, but what was probably only about thirty seconds. Still, that was enough. She never said a word. She didn’t have to. But being an orangutan on the other side of the thick plexiglas I probably wouldn’t have heard her anyway. If I never see her again, we’ll always have the zoo.

Christmas Eve Disappointment

While I am grateful that I still have my immediate family around, I have to say that tonight’s Christmas Eve dinner was one of the most disappointing, dare I say suckiest, I can ever remember. For different reasons various family members had other obligations/plans where only my mom, older brother and myself were left to have our annual Christmas dinner. As can be seen in our picture, not even Professor Phardtpounder’s Colon Cleanser Hot Sauce could lift mood.

Santa’s Village Revisited

In the spirit of the season, I scanned a bunch of slides today from our family visit to Santa’s Village back in 1963 and posted them on a Facebook page devoted to its history. I can see myself obviously having a ton of fun at such an exciting and memorable place for a young child. Bummer that I can’t remember a thing from our visit.

Hangin’ With A Squirrel

I was sitting on the grass in our backyard on this beautiful, sunny San Diego late December day picking weeds from around some of our milkweed plants when I was unexpectedly joined by a brave little squirrel who was hungry for some of the weeds we have growing in the grass. He does us a huge favor eating those. He was munching away not five feet from me. Occasionally we would steal longing glances at each other. I unfortunately didn’t have my camera with me to capture the moment we shared together so hopefully this graphic will suffice.

My Post, Post Birthday Lunch

After passing a homeless, guitar-playing Santa on a street corner, I had an intimate get together with some of my oldest friends for a Mary-organized belated birthday lunch at Phil’s BBQ in Point Loma. We even got to watch ourselves in line on Phil’s webcam, courtesy of Rodrigo’s Droid. I tried something new this time, ordering the “El Toro,” a deli sliced, char-grilled tri-tip sandwich. It was fantastically delicious. A carnivore’s delight. Also shared in Lannie’s plate of amazing onion rings. It was good to see my friends again. Should do group things a lot more often. Also love my birthday lasting for a few days. Received some baked delicacies from Lannie and some seasonal chocolate and a gift card from Mary.

Christmas Circle

Went on my annual drive-thru passed the decorated houses of Christmas Circle in Chula Vista last night with the my friends Sylvia, Rodrigo and their dogs, Lilo and Stitch. While it may have been slightly less festive than previous years (due, I’m sure, to the economy), it was still very enjoyable to see. Even added a few extra houses from outside of Christmas Circle. Every year I am impressed with how many houses get involved and to the lengths some families go to bring smiles to strangers’ faces.
