A New Backyard Friend

We were surprised by a new visitor in our backyard this evening. A small weasel. Even though our house overlooks a canyon I had no idea they inhabited our part of town. Was unfortunately not able to get any pictures of it. It was too fast and skittish. But it was really pretty.

Zoo Day With Heather

Spent a few hours at the San Diego Zoo with Heather, starting with her seeing the recently born giraffe calf for the first time. Also got to pet and feed some very old Galapagos tortoises. Since we were at the zoo, we talked biology while riding the Skyfari. Had lunch at Safari Kitchen.

Veterans War Memorial Building

While waiting to meet my friend Heather at the Zoo, I walked over to the Veterans War Memorial Building adjacent to the Zoo parking lot. I’d seen it many times but never went inside. I was actually surprised to find it open since it seemed like no one was there. Heard a couple of people talking inside one of the offices but nobody every came out to greet me. Took some pictures of a couple of cool World War I window displays with uniforms, accessories and medals but otherwise I think it’s more of a meeting place for veterans. They did have a good sized auditorium with a stage. Didn’t stay very long. As I was leaving there were a couple of cop cars detaining and questioning a older, transient in a wheelchair. Hope he wasn’t a veteran looking for help.

Vid Chat, Bren Style

Had a long-overdue video chat with Brenda in Austin tonight. Didn’t last as long as our usual ones but it was nice to talk to her face.

Another One-Day Viewing Record

Had my best ever single day viewing (2,214) of my Flickr photostream. Why? Because I posted just ten new pictures of girls in costume from this year’s Comic Con. I know some of the people are seriously interested in the quality of the cosplayers’ costumes, but I have a strong suspicion that most of the viewers are just anonymous lascivious perverts. You know, guys.

My stats for September 14, 2011

Lizardito – Day Of Tiny, Part Three

A tiny lizard, only about two inches long, let me get pretty close to take some privacy-invading pictures. I think I shall name him Emilio.

Emilio

Bugs – Day Of Tiny, Part Two

Spent some time outside and away from my computer this afternoon and took some macro photos of insects. Then I came right back inside heading straight for my computer. Learned what a ladybug larva looked like.

Kitten Feeding – Day Of Tiny, Part One

My niece dropped off the three newborn kittens today for us to take care of and feed throughout the day. Had one of the hardest feedings this morning, but also one of the best this afternoon. Their eyes are all open now, but they still can’t focus on things.

Ringer

Watched the series premiere of “Ringer” with Sarah Michelle Gellar. Wasn’t expecting to care for it much since it was on the CW network but I knew she would do a very good job with her character. Turns out I thought it was actually pretty good (despite some cheesy fake boating shots). There were so many moments when she spoke certain lines that she reminded me of Buffy. And when she was fighting the man (minor spoiler alert!) who was hired to kill her, I half expected her to bring out a stake and dust him. Even the very first shot of the show at night with a close-up of stone gargoyles took me back. It was good to see her on the small screen again. I think will keep watching.

New Fantasy Girls

Finally went back and worked on some more cosplay photos from this year’s Comic Con. Added them to my San Diego Comic Con 2011 Girls album on Flickr.

Inner Earth

Can’t wait to go see this movie at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Hope the music is as amazing as it is in this trailer.

Palacsinta And Beans

Had dinner over at my brother Ozzie’s house with my niece Kimi, my mom and my sister Beata. We had green beans and ham followed by palacsinta (Hungarian crepes). It was supposed to be a belated birthday dinner for my nephew, Stephen, but he had not returned from his San Francisco trip in time. After dinner we played with Mr. Blue, Mr. Pink and Ron Burgundy, the three week-and-a-half old kittens they found abandoned in their backyard.

The Mouth Of The San Diego River

Went for an afternoon walk with the Tapias from Robb Field in Ocean Beach to the mouth of the San Diego River. So many happy dogs jumping, running and playing in the shallow seawater, including Stitch who never seemed to tire of chasing his soggy green tennis ball.

9/11 Tribute

Posted a personal memorial tribute on Facebook for the ten year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. Reliving the whole event, even ten years later and from three thousand miles away, still brings out my unforgiving rage and makes my palms sweat.

What A Difference A Day Makes

After finding a baby Finch chick yesterday morning feeding under the feeder, this morning I was greeted by a lifeless Finch near the very same spot. Had a makeshift burial for it close to where the other birds will be spending their days eating and chirping. Life is fickle. One day it’s here, the next it’s gone.
