RIP, Glenn Velo

Just found out this morning that another one of my high school classmates had passed away. Seems like he had done some genuine good during his life.

Family Dinner, Care Of Stephen & Jeri

Had a fun family dinner over at my brother Ozzie’s house. The entire meal was prepared by my nephew Stephen and his girlfriend Jeri. We had hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, potato salad, beans and a salad. Some had root beer floats for dessert. Enzo was crazy as ever.

New Neighbor Welcoming Party

Went with my mom to a neighbor friend’s house for a party welcoming some new neighbors to the other end of our street. Interesting mix of young kids, adults, me and then a bunch of older folks. Topics of conversation were all over the place. Got to finally meet Jane’s new poodle Isabella.

Disappointing Defeat For One, Joyous Celebration For Another

Picked up some really delicious pizza, chicken, pasta and salad from Pat & Oscar’s for lunch and watched the women’s 2011 World Cup soccer finals between the United States and Japan. After blowing two leads in the game, the first in the closing minutes of regulation, the other in the closing minutes of the second overtime, the US displayed some extremely disappointing lack of skills in the penalty shootout, eventually loosing the match. As frustrating and unsatisfying as the end result was, I am very happy for the Japanese women’s team who, after losing so much in the devastating earthquake and tsunami earlier this year, desperately needed to give their country a reason to celebrate. If it wasn’t going to be the US, I’m glad it was Japan.

Nighttime Zoo

Had a really enjoyable time at the San Diego Zoo’s Nighttime Zoo. Didn’t see many animals because I was with two other families with kids, including two babies, but still had a very relaxed time. Got some really good shots of two sleeping polar bears. We stayed until they closed and were able to take a bus from the back of the Zoo all the way to the entrance for free.

Ambulating Along Shelter Island

Went for a morning walk with the Tapias along Shelter Island in hopes of seeing a gray whale that was spotted in the harbor yesterday. No luck with the whale-spotting but we did find the Girl in the Red Shoes. And it was a very enjoyable walk to areas we’d never been before.

Spotted My 100th Food!

Posted my 100th (actually 100th thru 103rd) posting on Foodspotting. Check that off my bucket (bad choice of word) list.

Another Official Request For One Of My Photos

Received a message through Flickr today from the Denver Zoo asking if they could use one of my photos for an new exhibit ID and that they would credit me for the photo. After thinking about it for two tenths of a nano second I wrote back saying yes. I will allow it. This time.

New Home For Scaley

Transfered our pet rattlesnake into a smaller, easier to carry container and then drove him (fastest he has ever gone at twenty miles an hour) down to the other end of the street, walked about a third of the way down the canyon and released him back into the wild. If he’d have had hands I’m sure they would have been waving. Or flailing wildly.

Tattling On The Rattling

Well we found yet another rattlesnake, our fourth so far, in our backyard. This one slithered into an area than made me a bit uncomfortable to try and coax it out. My mom got a neighbor to help and we were able to get it into an empty trash can where it is spending the night. Tomorrow morning it will be safely relocated.

Old Town, Part Deux

Spent a second day walking around Old Town in San Diego, taking pictures and meeting friends for lunch. This time it was with Lisa and her family at La Piñata, advertised as the oldest restaurant in Old Town.

Aqui Es Texcoco Means What Exactly?

Had a very unusual-tasting dinner of lamb at Aqui es Texcoco with the Tapias. EVERYTHING on the menu (except one quail dish and a quesadilla) had lamb. It didn’t taste bad, but it was very different. We almost didn’t stay when we found out it was just lamb but the waiter brought us two complimentary tacos to try and the meat was very tender. Tasted a bit gamey but not bad. With sauces it was very good. Next time I’ll have a beer with the meal, though.

All My Head Hairs Cut

Sylvia gave me another one of her great haircuts today in preparation for me sweating less during a humid Comic Con next week.

Before and after

Old Town And Young Friends

Had a really nice time walking around taking pictures in Old Town today. Then my day got even better after meeting up for lunch with Heather and her daughter plus Lannie with her son at Café Coyote. After lunch I went over to see the McCoy House Museum for the first time. Talked for about twenty minutes with one of the authentic period-dressed helpers inside the museum. Never got her name.

Unbaked Cheesecake

My mom made a strawberry cheesecake from a recipe she got from my cousin in Hungary. There is no baking and it uses vanilla wafer cookies. If it’s good it’ll end up on my recipe blog. (You have a recipe blog? Why, yes I do. Thanks for asking. Will link to it soon.)
